While studying Sport and Exercise Science and Personal Training for Health, Fitness and Performance, Sophie balanced her studies with competing at a high level in netball. She is now preparing to continue her education at the University of Sunderland.
As first team captain, Sophie represented the England AoC netball squad, competing against the Home Nations and English Universities.
“Representing England AoC has been an amazing experience. It’s given me opportunities to play alongside some fantastic athletes.”
Alongside competing, Sophie took part in a range of opportunities that helped develop her skills and experience. This included trips to Miami and Lanzarote, as well as travelling to China to help deliver netball coaching sessions for young players.
“Coaching in China was something I’ll never forget. It was a fantastic opportunity to share my knowledge of the game, experience a different culture and grow in confidence.”
Sophie is now working towards her Level 1 Netball Coaching qualification alongside her university studies.
Reflecting on her time at College, Sophie said:
“My time at college has been fantastic. I’ve been able to study subjects I’m passionate about while continuing to develop as a netball player. The support I’ve had from the college has been amazing. The staff have always encouraged me to challenge myself and make the most of every opportunity.”
From representing England AoC to coaching overseas, Sophie has made the most of the opportunities available at Gateshead College as she prepares for the next stage of her journey.
