One of our TV and Film students is celebrating after winning a prestigious television award.
Rose Malone won the ‘Student Awards: Factual – Short Form’ for her work on a project titled ‘The Independent Cinema Crisis’ at the Royal Television Society North East and the Borders awards.
The annual industry event celebrates the work of programme makers who create TV and other content, showcasing their work and achievements.
Rose, who is in the second year of her course, was the only college winner at the awards and was up against 7 university students in her category.
She said: “I was really shocked to win the award as I was in the same category as uni students and just being nominated was a really proud moment for me. To actually win the award is absolutely amazing and it made all the hard work and challenges that went in to producing the film, so worth it.
“I’d like to thank my teachers who were really supportive of the project and allowed me to work independently and flexibly on the production of the film, plus they were there for me as and when I needed them.”
Rose’s proud mum and dad attended the event with her, and her dad said: “Two years ago she didn’t even have the courage to take a bus, so to research, write, shoot, light, sound and edit a mature documentary, which involved reaching out to senior members of local cinema institutions and interviewing them, is an incredible step forward, and one that wouldn’t have been at all possible without the amazing, supportive and nurturing team at Gateshead College.”
John Simmons, Curriculum Leader at the college said “Huge congratulations to Rose, this is a fantastic achievement and we’re super proud of her. She’s incredibly talented and the award is testament to her vision for the film and all the hard work she put in to create it.”
This is the second year running that students from the college have won awards at this ceremony. In 2024, former students Fraser Kinnon and Elice Riley won the best Student Entertainment and Comedy Drama category.
