Meet the team supporting student wellbeing at Gateshead College

September 3, 2026

Starting college is an exciting step, but it’s normal to face challenges along the way.

Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, struggling with your mental health, worried about your safety, or simply need someone to talk to, our Safeguarding, Welfare and Wellbeing Team is here to support you.

To help you understand the support available, we’ve answered some of the questions students ask us most often.

What does a Welfare and Wellbeing Officer do?

Our Welfare and Wellbeing Officers support students whose mental health or wellbeing may be affecting their studies, attendance or overall college experience.

We’re here to listen without judgement, help you explore your options and provide practical advice and support. We can also help you access specialist services when needed.

We offer dedicated support for care-experienced students, young carers and young parents, helping them make the most of their time at college.

Are you counsellors?

No, we’re not counsellors.

However, if counselling is the right option for you, we can help you access the appropriate service.

Our team has experience across areas including education, psychology, social work and mental health. We’re here to provide guidance, help you build resilience and ensure you get the support you need to succeed at college.

How can I access the wellbeing service?

There are several ways to get in touch with us.

You can ask a tutor or member of staff to refer you, or you can contact us directly by emailing [email protected].

You’ll also find posters across our campuses with information about the support available and how to contact the team. A Welfare and Wellbeing Officer is based at each campus, making it easy to access support when you need it.

What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding is about helping to keep everyone safe while they’re at college.

This includes protecting students from bullying, harassment, abuse, exploitation, discrimination and neglect, while also supporting their mental health and wellbeing.

If something is worrying you, whether it’s happening at college, at home, online or elsewhere, we’re here to listen, support you and help you stay safe.

How do I report a concern?

If you have a concern about yourself or someone else, please speak to a member of the Safeguarding, Welfare and Wellbeing Team.

You can also speak to any trusted member of staff, who will ensure the right support is put in place.

What if I’m worried about another student?

Looking out for each other is an important part of college life.

If you’re concerned about a fellow student, please tell us. We’ll take your concerns seriously and work with you to ensure the right support is available.

Is what I tell you confidential?

We will always treat your information with respect and only share it with people who need to know.

However, if we believe that you or someone else is at risk of harm, we may need to share information to help keep people safe.
