A talented young rugby player has been selected to captain the North Group of England Under 18s in their upcoming fixture against England South U18’s.
Niamh Swailes is part of Gateshead College’s Women’s Rugby Academy where she is also studying a BTEC in Sports Development and Coaching as well as an A-Level in Sociology.
The 17 year old from Chester-le-Street who started playing rugby when she was 13 for Ryton RUFC has also been part of the RFU Centre of Excellence programme. She is now training with Allianz Premier 15’s Team DMP Durham Sharks.
Speaking about her selection into the England squad and captaincy, Niamh said: “I’m over the moon to have been chosen to captain the team. It’s a real honour and I’m hoping my performance will enable me to move up and be selected to represent England Under 18s in 2022 against Wales and Scotland and then push to be chosen for England Under 20s.”
Phil Wallis, head rugby coach at Gateshead College said: “Huge congratulations to Niamh who really deserves this. To be chosen for the squad is a fantastic achievement and on top of that to be given the captaincy is a testament to her work ethic and sporting talents.
“Niamh is a driven rugby player who loves the game and always gives 110% and her determination has paid off. She’s previously been a part of England Camps and the feedback and statistics from these have been hugely impressive and I have no doubt she will have a very bright future playing for her country.
As part of the college’s Rugby Academy, Niamh trains three times a week and plays in competitive matches, whilst also working towards her qualifications.
