Digital Journalism Student Interviews Local MP

June 11, 2026

A Digital Journalism and content creation student recently had the chance to interview a local MP as part of their final major project.

The idea started with a podcast about politics. Wanting to make it as real as possible, Alfie reached out to local MPs, emailing both Sharon Hodgson and Mark Ferguson. One couldn’t take part, but the other said yes.

There was a lot to get ready beforehand. Alfie planned out the questions, set up the studio, and structured the podcast into three clear sections: local politics, national politics, and the role of an MP. Even with all that preparation, the nerves were definitely there — and the delay before starting only made it worse. But as soon as the interview got going, those nerves quickly settled.

“It was a great experience getting to meet and have a chat with Mark. He was lovely and getting to know him was great as well,” Alfie said.

“The conversation itself was relaxed and interesting, and Mark came across as really approachable. One of the standout moments was hearing what a typical week looks like for an MP. It gave a real insight into just how busy and demanding the job is, especially with all the travelling involved.”

As well as being a great experience, the project helped Alfie build some important skills. Interviewing was a big one, alongside the technical side of setting everything up properly and making sure recording could start without any issues. Looking back, he said he would try to memorise more of his questions next time instead of relying on notes, just to make it feel even more natural.

Overall, it was a really positive experience. Getting the chance to meet and chat with an MP, and bring a project like this to life, is something Alfie won’t forget anytime soon and it’s a great example of how hands-on projects help build confidence and real-world skills.
