Annual Welding Competition Brings Apprentices Together

Annual Welding Competition Brings Apprentices Together

April 24, 2026

We held our annual Welding Competition for Year 1 and Year 2 apprentices, an event that gives learners the chance to step away from their usual routine and showcase the skills they’ve been developing both at college and in the workplace.

The competition takes place each year around half-term and runs over two days, giving apprentices time to fully focus on the challenge while enjoying a slightly more relaxed atmosphere.

It’s always great to see how much confidence and ability our apprentices demonstrate, particularly when they are given the opportunity to work independently and show what they can do.

We’re proud to run the competition with the continued support of Washington Metalworks. Washington Metalworks is one of our largest employer partners, and by September will have over 20 apprentices training with us across three cohorts, from Level 2 through to Level 4.

Paul from Washington Metalworks plays a key role in making the event a success, providing the welding task for the apprentices to complete and supplying some impressive trophies for the winners. He also gives up his time to come into college and judge the competition, offering valuable feedback and insight from an employer’s perspective. Engagement like this is invaluable for our apprentices, helping them understand industry expectations and gain confidence in their abilities.

With this year’s competition taking place around Easter, we added a seasonal twist. Alongside the trophies, Easter eggs were awarded to the winners – a small addition that went down very well with everyone involved!

We love running the welding competition each year. It’s a highlight in the calendar for both staff and apprentices, and a great example of how practical learning, friendly competition and strong employer partnerships come together to enhance the apprentice experience.
