Retrofit


This course is for anyone interested in construction from tradespeople to housing and property workers and maintenance teams looking to develop their understanding of domestic retrofit and how existing homes can be improved to enhance energy efficiency, increase comfort and reduce carbon emissions.

Course content includes:

  • Introduction to retrofit, domestic building performance, fabric-first principles and energy efficiency measures.
  • Insulation, ventilation, moisture/damp risk, heating, occupant behaviour and whole-house thinking.
  • Awareness of retrofit roles, quality assurance, customer engagement and standards such as PAS 2035/PAS 2038 where relevant.
  • How retrofit supports local housing, fuel poverty, net zero and construction skills needs.

By the end of this course, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to:

  • Understand the purpose and principles of domestic retrofit.
  • Identify common retrofit measures and the risks of poor sequencing or isolated interventions.
  • Build awareness for progression into retrofit assessor, construction, building services or energy efficiency roles.
  • Support employers working in housing, property maintenance, construction and decarbonisation.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free course fees and there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help cover the costs of coming to college, depending on your circumstances.

If you don’t qualify for funding help and have to pay for course, you could pay a 25% deposit and four consecutive monthly standing order payments for the balance. The course fee must be over £100 to qualify.
