ESOL 16-18

We offer a range of different levels of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses designed to support learners at different stages of their English language journey.

Entry Level 1
Our ESOL Entry Level 1 course is for learners with beginner-level English. This course covers basic phrases and everyday survival English and you can progress to Entry Level 2.
You’ll study for ten hours per week over two or three days a week.

Entry Level 2

Our ESOL Entry Level 2 course is for learners that have a basic level of English. We’ll help learners form simple sentences and hold short conversations about daily routines and you can progress to Entry Level 3.

You’ll study for ten hours per week over two or three days a week.

Entry Level 3
Our ESOL Entry Level 3 course is an excellent choice if your English is at pre-intermediate level (you can confidently handle everyday situations, discuss familiar topics, ask for directions and understand straightforward texts or conversations). You’ll develop language for everyday life and employability across four core areas; Speaking & Listening, Reading, Writing and Vocabulary & Grammar. You can also progress onto our Level 1 course.

You’ll study for 4 hours, classes are held one day a week in the evening.

Level 1
Our Level 1 ESOL course is designed for learners with intermediate English skills. It helps you develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing in a supportive and welcoming environment. The course also prepares you to progress to Level 2 and further study, including higher education opportunities.

You’ll study for 6 hours per week over two days a week.

Level 2

Our ESOL Level 2 course is for learners whose first language is not English. It is designed for learners who already have strong English skills and want to reach an advanced, proficient level.

You’ll study for eight hours per week over two days a week.

All our courses will help you:

  • Develop your English skills for life in the UK
  • Prepare you for work in the UK
  • Understand British citizenship
  • Improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills

Our ESOL courses also include the opportunity to gain a qualification in employability skills to prepare you for work in the UK. Classes are held in the mornings and afternoons with a range of different times and days. You’ll also have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications in ESOL.

Assessment

You will have the opportunity to take qualifications in:

• Reading
• Writing
• Speaking and Listening

These awards are generally completed once a term. You will also complete a qualification in Employability Skills.

Your ESOL classes will be delivered by a supportive and encouraging teaching team with a range of experience of teaching English to students from around the world both in the UK and overseas.
Your ESOL classes will be delivered at our Baltic Campus. As well as access to all areas of our campus, you will study in dedicated ESOL classrooms with interactive whiteboards and PCs and use a language centre to support your independent learning.

You can progress to the next level in ESOL, Entry level 2. After completion of Entry level 3 you can progress onto mainstream vocational courses at Level 1 or apply to become a British citizen.

If you wish to move into higher education, Level 2 is accepted for entry to a range of courses, but please check the specific entry requirements with the individual providers.

Following an initial assessment you will be placed in the correct ESOL class to enable you to learn and progress.
This course is free if you are aged 19 years and under. Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced course fees, depending on personal circumstances. For more information, come along to an Enrolment Event, call 0191 490 4627 or email [email protected]
