Gateshead College is seeking to appoint a Co-opted Governor to join its Governance Committee.

This is an exciting time in the College’s journey. Having recently approved our new Strategic Plan, we are looking for passionate and committed individuals to join us as we shape the future of education, skills and opportunities across our region. Your expertise could help us turn our ambitions into reality and make a lasting difference to learners, employers and communities.

We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants with expertise in governance, board administration, legal or regulatory compliance who can contribute to the work of the Governance Committee and support the College in maintaining high standards of governance and continuous improvement.

No previous governor experience is required. We provide a comprehensive induction, training and ongoing support to help you succeed in the role.

About the Role

As a Co-opted Governor, you will provide independent advice, insight and challenge to the Governance Committee. You will support the review and development of governance arrangements, Board effectiveness and compliance with governance requirements, helping to ensure the College continues to operate to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the work of the Governance Committee and support the continuous development of governance arrangements.
  • Provide strategic advice and challenge on governance-related matters.
  • Support reviews of Board and committee effectiveness, governance policies and governance compliance.
  • Promote high standards of accountability, transparency and ethical conduct.
  • Attend and actively participate in Governance Committee meetings.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience in governance, compliance, legal, company secretariat or a related field.
  • An understanding of good governance principles and effective board practice.
  • Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to provide constructive challenge and independent judgement.
  • A commitment to the values and mission of Gateshead College.
  • Previous experience within the further education sector is not essential.

Time Commitment

  • 4 x Committee Meetings per year
  • 2 x Board Strategy Days per year
  • Together with preparation time and occasional College events.
