New partnership with Taylor Wimpey opens doors to construction careers

July 10, 2025

We’ve joined forces with one of the UK’s largest housebuilders, Taylor Wimpey, to help equip young people with the skills they need for a career in construction.

The partnership will provide hands-on opportunities for students in the region, supporting the local community and building a skilled workforce. Giving students practical experience and careers advice to prepare them for entering the sector.

Taylor Wimpey North East’s production team will visit Gateshead College to deliver workshops, presentations and feedback sessions, giving students real-world insight into industry skills. As a major local employer, they also offer apprenticeships, creating a direct path from classroom to construction site.

David Abercrombie, Technical Director and Chair of the Young Persons Forum at Taylor Wimpey North East said: “Working closely with Gateshead College, their teaching staff and students, allows us to help shape the next generation of skilled professionals who will contribute positively to our local economy and communities. We don’t just build homes; we aim to build futures by creating employment pathways and supporting social mobility within the North East.”

Partnerships like this are vital for tackling the construction industry’s growing skills gap, particularly here in the North East, where demand for skilled labour continues to rise. Collaborations between employers and training providers ensure learning is aligned with what the industry really needs.

John Deary, Assistant Principal for Construction at Gateshead College, said: “We’re delighted to partner with Taylor Wimpey North East. Our focus has always been on equipping our students with skills that employers need and this partnership is a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain direct insight into the modern-day demands of the construction industry.

“It also highlights our commitment to addressing skill gaps and developing the next generation of talent ready to thrive in the sector. From specialist trade courses to professional-level upskilling programmes”
