Today our students were starstruck when The 1975 frontman Matty Healy surprised them all with a huge announcement.
He was joined by his Dad, Tim Healy and fellow founder of Sunday for Sammy Ray Laidlaw to announce that Matty Healy will be performing at Sunday for Sammy in February next year at the Utilitia Arena in Newcastle.
Sunday for Sammy is a legendary North East show celebrating local talent and the late Sammy Johnson. Packed with surprise stars from TV, theatre and music, it raises vital funds to help young performers kick-start their careers.
Matty also led a song writing workshop with our students and gave his insight into how to write a hit like The 1975.
“It’s been brilliant working with the students at the college today and getting a chance to reinvest in the community, its something me and my Dad are very passionate about. I hope they are as excited for Sunday for Sammy next year as I am.”
David Alexander, principal at Gateshead College, said “It’s been brilliant to have Matty Healy from The 1975 in college, especially now that he’s become a patron of Sunday for Sammy. That really highlights his commitment to supporting young people, which clearly shone through during his time with our students.
“We’re all about giving our students the employment edge, and what better way than hearing directly from someone who has built such an inspiring career in the creative industry. Matty’s stories and insights were motivational and I know our students gained so much from the experience. Opportunities like this are fantastic for our students and we’re incredibly grateful to Matty for spending time with us.”
