The Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, visited our Skills Academy for Construction to learn more about Gateshead’s ambitious regeneration plans and how the college is helping to develop the skilled workforce needed to support them.
Led by local MP Mark Ferguson, the visit showcased the strong partnership between the college, Gateshead Council, and leading construction employers. Ms Phillipson met with our Principal, David Alexander, and Dale Owens, Chief Executive of Gateshead Council, who outlined the council’s regeneration vision and how collaboration with the college is central to delivering it.
She also spoke with representatives from Taylor Wimpey, Sir Robert McAlpine, and Bellway about how we are working together to meet the evolving skills needs of the construction sector.
During the visit, Ms Phillipson spent time with our T level students and PlanBEE apprentices, discussing their experiences on their programmes and their future ambitions.
She toured our workshops, met current and prospective students and observed live demonstrations across a range of trades, including electrical, plumbing, bricklaying, and carpentry and joinery.
David Alexander, Principal and CEO of the college, said: “It was fantastic to welcome Ms Phillipson to the college and show her the work we’re doing to give our students the best possible start in their careers. By working closely with employers and partners like Gateshead Council, we’re making sure our training is aligned with real industry needs and that our students are ready to hit the ground running.”
