Some of our Level 3 Hospitality, Events, and Tourism Management students travelled to London for a one night residential to not only experience different tourist attractions but also to visit the world-famous World Travel Market at ExCel London.
The trip to London was an exciting and educational experience that allowed students to gain insight into the travel and tourism industry and to connect with experts in the wider world.
The students began their trip with a 7:30AM LNER train from Newcastle to London Kings Cross. Their first stop was Madame Tussauds, where they explored the famous wax figures and discovered why interactive attractions are so popular with tourists. Highlights included photo opportunities and the Marvel 4D experience.
They then visited the London Eye, enjoying panoramic sunset views of landmarks such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and the River Thames. In the evening, the group attended Just for One Day, a musical telling the story of Live Aid.
This showcased how theatre contributes to London’s cultural tourism and nighttime economy.
The students stayed overnight at YHA St Paul’s, a budget-friendly hostel in central London. This gave them insight into affordable accommodation for young travellers, complete with a free breakfast.
The group also travelled to ExCeL London for the World Travel Market, one of the most educational parts of the trip.
They explored stands from global exhibitors promoting destinations, airlines, and hotels, with a strong focus on sustainability and future travel trends. Students collected brochures, grabbed freebies, and attended a seminar by Bettany Hughes on culture and heritage in travel—an inspiring end to the visit.
Overall, the trip to London was both enjoyable and educational, as students gained valuable insight into the travel industry in not only the capital city of England, but also globally from the World Travel Market.
