A Newcastle MP has accepted her damehood wearing an outfit designed by one of our former students, Lamin Gibba.
Lamin studied Level 3 TV & Film at Gateshead College, where he launched his own fashion brand, Jerry J. The suit he created for Chi Onwurah was inspired by West African fabrics and the iconic colours of Newcastle United.
We caught up with Lamin last year to hear what being part of the Gateshead College legacy means to him.
“What I loved most about studying at Gateshead College was the creative freedom and the constant encouragement from tutors to believe in my vision. The college gave me the foundation and confidence to develop my brand and express my identity through fashion.
My highlight was connecting with like‑minded students and being part of a community that truly supports your growth and individuality.
My advice to new students would be make the most of every opportunity, stay consistent, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone — that’s where the real learning happens.”
