We hosted the fourth regional heat of SPARKS Learner of the Year 2026. The competition is a national showcase for the very best up‑and‑coming electrical talent.
Each year, learners from colleges across the UK take on a challenging practical task designed by industry experts, putting their knowledge, precision and problem‑solving skills to the test.
Regional heats take place across the country, with the top performers earning a place in the Grand Final, where they compete for the title of SPARKS Learner of the Year.
Our Skills Academy for Construction was full of energy as competitors got to work, supported throughout by their teachers and the brilliant industry partners who help make opportunities like this possible.
Two of our students took part in the regional heat, including Jonty Binovec, who is studying Level 3 Electrical Installation. Jonty highlighted how valuable the experience was for building industry connections.
He said: “The judges are all well-established within the electrical installation industry, so having the chance to speak with them has been really valuable. It’s helped me build a better understanding of the industry I want to work in.”
A massive well done to the winner, Isaac Chapman from Darlington College, and the runner‑up, Tait Pallas from HICSA Sunderland College. And of course, congratulations to every learner who took part. The standard of work on display was outstanding, and you should all be incredibly proud of what you achieved.
