Engineering Apprentice Wins Prestigious Apprentice Award

Engineering Apprentice Wins Prestigious Apprentice Award

May 6, 2025

Our machining technician apprentice Ellen Robson is celebrating after being named Apprentice of the Year at the prestigious Made in the North East Awards.

Ellen scooped the award, ahead of 9 other finalists from across the region including another of our apprentices, Harvey Guy from Ford Aerospace who did fantastically well to make the shortlist.

This award recognised an individual apprentice in a manufacturing company of any sector and size, with the judges looking for an individual who has shown the greatest achievement, potential and contribution to their employer.

Ellen is the first apprentice in the UK to complete the Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship. During her training, she was involved in a reverse engineering project, personally redesigning a tool for a customer’s piston component, cutting production time from four hours to one hour and saving the client more than £1,000 per part.

Ellen’s had an amazing few months not just winning this award but being named the college’s overall Apprentice of the Year Award as part of our Edge Awards in February.

Graham Stouph, Head of Engineering at the college said “Huge congratulations to both Ellen and Harvey for being named finalists at the Made in the North East Awards. Ellen has been so dedicated and professional throughout her apprenticeship and this award is testament to all her hard work.

“I’m proud not only of Ellen and Harvey but the whole engineering team here at the college who support and encourage our apprentices to be the best they can day in, day out”

Amy Dobson, Group Marketing Manager at Renovo Tool Group, said “We’re incredibly proud of Ellen, this award shows the real impact she’s had and what’s possible when local businesses back local talent. Apprentices like Ellen are driving UK manufacturing forward, and we can’t wait to see her represent the North East at the UK finals.”
