As part of our 80th anniversary celebrations, we’re proud to spotlight the individuals who’ve helped shape Gateshead College’s legacy, those who began as learners and returned as leaders, continuing to inspire through their journey.
One such individual is Nicola Taylor, who first joined Gateshead College in 2010 as an accountancy apprentice. Today, she’s our Director of Governance and Compliance, a role that reflects not only her professional growth but her enduring connection to the college.
Nicola’s journey began with day-release classes, working towards her Level 2 qualification while gaining hands-on experience in the workplace. “It was mainly classroom-based learning,” she recalls. “But the best part was meeting other apprentices, people of all ages and backgrounds. We supported each other, shared stories from our jobs, and sat our exams together.”
Leaving school behind wasn’t easy, but it was the right move. “I’d started A levels but realised university wasn’t for me. The apprenticeship was a big change—I was suddenly working alongside adults from all walks of life. That experience was invaluable.”
Though she initially imagined a future in accountancy, Nicola’s career took a different turn. She discovered a passion for governance, working at Newcastle University and later for a multi-academy trust. “I started as a personal assistant, then became Assistant Director of Governance at NCG. Eventually, I found my way back here.”
Returning to Gateshead College as a senior leader gave Nicola a new perspective. “As an apprentice, you don’t always see the full picture. Now, I see the diversity of our students, their achievements, and the challenges they face. I’m proud of the supportive, positive community we’ve built.”
One moment that stands out for Nicola is hearing a student governor speak to Ofsted inspectors. “He told them how valued he felt on our board. It was emotional, a real reminder that small things can make a big difference.”
Nicola is proud to be part of the college’s 80th legacy. “It’s exciting. I came here in 2010 as an apprentice, and now I work here. I love the culture, the people, and the sense of pride. It’s amazing to think about what’s been achieved in the past 80 years and what’s still to come.”
Her advice to students and staff is simple: “Be yourself. Gateshead College is an inclusive place where everyone is accepted. You’ll make friends, feel part of the community, and have a great experience.”
Looking ahead, Nicola hopes to see the same pattern continue, students growing in confidence and going on to do incredible things. “You don’t have to know what you want to do when you leave school. I thought I’d be an accountant, then I thought I’d go to university. I changed direction, and it led me to a career I love. Paths change, and that’s completely normal.”
