How Gateshead College Opened Doors to International Experiences

December 30, 2025
We’re celebrating 80 years of helping students dream big and go further. Gateshead College has always been about opportunity and Stefan’s story proves it. From international trips to starting his own business, he’s making the most of every chance to grow.

Why did you choose to study at Gateshead College?
I think it was the teachers. From my secondary school experience, my advisor and teachers were really open and welcoming when I visited. That made me feel comfortable and confident about joining.

What do you love most about being a student at Gateshead College?
For me, it’s the opportunities. I’ve had amazing international experiences through the college—like going to Valencia with other business students and working on an external project that took me to Chamonix, France. The external opportunities here are incredible.

Do you have a favourite memory from college so far?
Definitely the trip to Valencia. It was me, my friends, and the teachers in a really open environment, experiencing a different culture together. It was unexpected and challenging to find businesses willing to host us because we had 10 students studying different subjects—five in business and five in digital. We visited an IT company that supports hospitals and medical companies with scanning technology. We learned how Spanish culture differs from England and how they emphasize AI in healthcare. It was more about cultural exchange than heavy work, but it was an amazing experience.

Is there a particular teacher or mentor who’s had an impact on you?
Yes, Aidan Lish, my business teacher. He’s very open-minded and supportive, helping students both internally and externally. He’s definitely been a highlight of my course.

How did you get involved with Alpine Run?
It’s a funny story—I was at work and saw a message on Classroom about applying for an opportunity. Their motto was “Running from the streets to the peaks,” and I thought, why not? I applied during my break and, a week later, I was in London for an open event. Gateshead College helped fund it, and from there I got involved in projects and events across England. Eventually, I was selected for a race in Germany—the biggest trail race in the world! Out of 600 participants, only 20 of us were chosen.

What do you think has helped the college thrive for the last 8 years?
Definitely the opportunities it gives students. I’ve spoken to students from other colleges, and they don’t get the same chances—whether it’s internal workshops or international projects. These experiences really help students grow.

What advice would you give to students thinking about coming to Gateshead College?
Come and give it a try! If you don’t like it, you can always leave—but I think you’ll stay. Stick with your course, engage with your teachers, and get involved. You’ll get so many opportunities and so much out of it.

If you could describe Gateshead College in three words, what would they be?
Opportunity, thriving, inclusive.

What does it mean to you to be part of the college’s legacy?
I feel honoured. The college keeps improving every year. Even from my first year to my second, I’ve seen so much change—more student feedback, more opportunities, and more direct involvement with students.

What do you hope for the next 8 years?
I hope the college continues offering external opportunities. They help with networking, careers, and understanding different perspectives. It’s about being part of the community, not just studying and leaving.

What’s next for you after college?
I’m in my second year now, and I’m thinking about university. I’ve also started my own business—a marketing and copywriting agency. I used to freelance, but now I’m focusing on helping businesses in the North East. It’s going well because the teachers have supported me with connections and opportunities.
