When Josh Thynne joined Gateshead College, his sights were set firmly on football. But when an unexpected injury changed his plans, Josh turned a setback into an opportunity and built a thriving business, JT Sport Massage.
“My favourite memory was definitely playing football in my first year,” Josh recalls. “The vibes in the team were great, 7we trained every day and played loads of matches. That was my favourite time at college.”
Josh originally studied A Levels in Biology, Psychology, and BTEC Sport Science, with plans to continue through the football scholarship programme. But after his injury, he decided to make the most of his massage qualification. “I thought, ‘I can’t play football, so let’s see how far I can take this qualification.’ That’s where the idea for JT Sport Massage came from.”
Support from staff played a big role in Josh’s success. “David Parker was fantastic. He helped me with the business side, like insurance and setting things up. Caroline, Head of A Levels, was also brilliant. The support was amazing.”
When asked to describe Gateshead College in three words, Josh chose inclusive, supportive, and committed. He believes these qualities have helped the college thrive for 80 years: “It’s always progressing and introducing new courses, embracing social media, and creating opportunities. That’s what sets it apart.”
Josh’s favourite part of college life? “Socialising. I loved spending time in the library upstairs with my mates after lessons and during study hours. It was a great space to hang out and feel comfortable.”
His advice for current and future students “Sit down and figure out your goal. Where do you want to go? Then set out the steps and work as hard as you can. Put in the effort and take action, that’s how you make it happen.”
Josh also gained real-world experience during his massage course, completing charity events like the Blaydon Race, Newcastle 10K, and Great North 10K with the Red Sky Foundation. “Those opportunities were brilliant for building confidence and skills.”
As for the future, Josh hopes Gateshead College continues to innovate: “Keep introducing new courses, pushing on social media, and listening to student feedback. That’s the best way to keep moving forward.”
