How an Automotive Apprentice Found His Path

How an Automotive Apprentice Found His Path

November 25, 2025

As Gateshead College marks 80 years of innovation, opportunity, and skills development, it’s the perfect moment to celebrate the people whose stories show the college’s lasting impact. One of those stories comes from Joe, a 24-year-old automotive apprentice training to become a heavy vehicle parts fitter. After starting out on a completely different career path, Joe found his way to Gateshead College through a passion for vehicles and a desire to learn hands-on skills.

We caught up with Joe to hear how his apprenticeship has shaped his future and what Gateshead College’s 80-year milestone means to him.

How did you decide to do an apprenticeship?
I wasn’t originally studying anything like this—I was on a completely different career path. But I’ve always been interested in the automotive industry, so I started looking for apprenticeships online. One that stood out was with Sunderland Council; they have a great apprenticeship scheme that’s been running for years. Gateshead College was the training provider, and that’s how I got into it.

What were you doing before your apprenticeship?
I was doing a degree in sports physiotherapy, which I thought would be my career after school. But I realised it wasn’t for me. I became really interested in vehicles—both heavy and light—and the opportunity to work with the council appealed to me. Gateshead College offers the heavy vehicle training that other colleges don’t, so that sealed the deal.

What do you love most about Gateshead College?
Ahe facilities are fantastic, and the staff are really helpful. I was a bit nervous at first because I’m older than some of the lads straight out of school, but everyone made me feel welcome. They strike the right balance, pushing you when you’re ready but not overwhelming you. It’s a great environment to learn in.

Has any teacher had a big impact on you?
Yes, my teacher Kev. He’s really engaging and keeps things light-hearted. You can have a laugh with him, but he’s also very knowledgeable and approachable. If he doesn’t know something, he’ll find out and show you. Honestly, he’s one of the best lecturers I’ve had college, uni, school, anywhere.

What’s been the best part of doing an apprenticeship?
Being treated like a professional. You get the theory and practical training, but when you’re at work, they trust you to do real tasks. It’s hands-on and feels like you’re part of the team, which is very different from being a full-time student.

Gateshead College is celebrating its 80th anniversary—what do you think has helped it thrive?
A: Definitely the staff. They’ve built a great reputation. If councils are sending apprentices here, that says a lot. Plus, it’s the only college in the area offering this course, and employers clearly value that.

Describe Gateshead College in three words.
Encouraging, motivating, fun.

What advice would you give someone considering an apprenticeship?
Go for it, whatever your age. There’s no discrimination; everyone starts at the same level. They treat you like a professional, which is great if you’re an adult who doesn’t want to be patronised. I had worries about being older, but there are people older than me, and everyone’s treated equally. It’s a fantastic place to learn.

Finally, what do you love most about Gateshead College?
The facilities. I haven’t been to many colleges, but the workshop here is excellent. They have all the equipment you could need, which makes the practical side of learning so much better.
