From student to staff at Gateshead College

At Gateshead College, we pride ourselves on creating opportunities that transform lives. Few stories illustrate this better than Reald’s journey—from a curious student exploring his options to a valued member of our team.

Reald’s first encountered Gateshead College during a school visit. “We had taster sessions at the college, and during COVID, the college kept in touch with us to help with enrolling for Project Choice,” he recalls.

Virtual sessions and an in-person tour gave him his first glimpse of the college environment. “It was great because I’d never been here before, and it was good to see what the college was like.”

He began his journey with two years on Project Choice—Stages 1 and 2. During Stage 2, he was offered a work experience placement on Front of House. What started as a six-week placement turned into four years of being part of the Gateshead College team. “That opportunity changed everything for me,” he says.

When the library needed extra support, Reald stepped in as an apprentice, working across multiple teams. “I had a lovely experience helping learners in each department,” he says. Today, Reald has been a Library and Learning Officer for two years—and he’s still loving every moment.

Asked about his favourite memory, Reald doesn’t hesitate: “When I became a permanent member of staff.” For him, the best part of the job is working as part of a team and helping students succeed. “I love seeing students grow and flourish—and seeing the college and library full of life.”

As Gateshead College marks its 80th anniversary, Reald reflects on what this milestone means: “It’s very special and close to my heart. It’s a privilege and an honour to work for Gateshead College, and this milestone is something we should all celebrate.”

Reald hopes the college continues to thrive: “Keep going as we are now—and see more and more students joining the college.” His advice to anyone considering Gateshead College? “Enrol, come and enjoy your time. Make every moment special.”
