When you walk into the Gateshead College shop, chances are you’ll be greeted by a warm smile and a friendly chat from Floss. For the past 15 years, she’s been a familiar face to staff and students alike—bringing energy, laughter, and a sense of community to campus life.
Floss joined Gateshead College after being made redundant from her previous job. “I applied for a few roles, got this one, and I’ve never looked back,” she says. What started as a fresh start has turned into a career filled with connection and purpose.
“When I first started, we didn’t feel part of the college, it was like two separate worlds,” Floss recalls. “Over time, that changed. Now, I feel completely part of the college, and I love it. It’s one of the best places to work.”
Ask Floss what she loves most, and the answer the students. “I love the interaction. We talk, sometimes dance, and I listen when they need someone to talk to. It’s just lovely and so rewarding.”
Her favourite memory? “When Joanne started, she’s like my right-hand woman. That was about five years ago, and it’s been great fun since.”
The college shop has come a long way since Floss first stepped behind the counter. “Back then, it was dark, the fridges didn’t work—it was doom and gloom,” she laughs. “Now it’s bright, modern, and we sell a much bigger range. Aramark really transformed the place.”
As Gateshead College celebrates 80 years, Floss reflects on her own milestone: “I can’t believe I’ve been here 15 years! I’ve never stayed anywhere longer than 7–8 years, so it feels like a privilege.” Her advice for anyone thinking about joining Gateshead College? “Do it! You’ll love it. It’s so rewarding.”
