As part of our 80th anniversary celebrations, we’re proud to spotlight the students who’ve helped shape Gateshead College’s legacy and continue to inspire others through their work.
One such student is Nathan Glendinning, a former Film and TV student whose childhood love of storytelling has grown into a successful career as a director and producer. His journey began at Gateshead College, where creativity met opportunity and dreams started to take shape.
“I’ve always loved storytelling through film and television,” Nathan shares. “When I was looking at college options, I didn’t expect to find something so hands-on and industry-focused right here in the North East. Gateshead College stood out immediately.”
Nathan describes his time at college as transformative. What started as a fun interest quickly became a serious passion, thanks to a course that encouraged creative freedom and built real-world skills.
“Those two years gave me the confidence to pursue film professionally,” he says. “We weren’t just learning theory we were out filming, collaborating, and building portfolios. It was exciting and empowering.”
One standout memory for Nathan was a horror film project that took him and his classmates to the Lake District. “One day I was acting in a friend’s short film, the next we were driving across the country to shoot scenes. It felt like a buzzing, collaborative hub every single day.”
Supportive staff also played a key role in Nathan’s journey. He speaks fondly of lecturers like Mark Smiles, who’s still teaching at the college today. “Mark and the team were incredibly encouraging. They gave us space to experiment and grow.”
Now working as a creative director and producer for a UK-based video agency, Nathan is also developing a personal short film titled The Bluebird’s Daughter, inspired by the people and stories of the North East.
“I want to reflect the authenticity of this region,” he explains. “And I’m hoping to involve current Gateshead College students in the production. I was given amazing opportunities as a student, now I want to give that back.”
Returning to the college as a collaborator has been a humbling experience. “It’s surreal to be on the other side now,” Nathan says. “There’s a special place in my heart for Gateshead College. The students are ambitious, and I’m excited to help guide them, just like I was guided.”
Nathan sees the North East as a growing hub for film and television, with strong community support and increasing investment. “It’s a great time to be starting out. People here genuinely want to help new talent succeed.”
Being part of Gateshead College’s 80-year legacy is something Nathan holds with pride. “It feels like a full-circle moment. The college has nurtured so much talent, and I’m proud to be part of that story.”
He still keeps in touch with fellow students, including his best friend who now works in sports broadcasting. “We started with the same foundation at Gateshead College, and it’s amazing to see where we’ve both ended up.”
His advice to future students? “Make the most of every moment. Discover your passion, build friendships, and create work you’re proud of. Dive in and enjoy it.”
Describe Gateshead College in three words? “Growing regional talent.”
Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the college’s future? “I hope it keeps doing what it does best; opening doors, building strong industry links and nurturing creative minds. I’d love to see it become even more central to the region’s creative industry in the next 80 years.”
