As Gateshead College marks its incredible 80th anniversary, we’ve been reflecting on the experiences that make this place so special. For many students, college isn’t just about lessons and exams. It’s about friendships, opportunities and moments that shape their future. Dan Green, a former student, shared his story, and it perfectly captures what Gateshead College is all about.
“My favourite memory? Definitely Freshers’ Week. It was amazing, I got to know everybody really well. There were great activities, and it was just a brilliant time.”
When asked what he loved most about his time at Gateshead College, Dan didn’t hesitate: “My time as Student Governor and Course Rep was incredible. I loved talking to fellow students about their issues and meeting with college executives at board level. It made me feel important and professional, like I was learning and gaining real workplace experience.”
Reflecting on the college’s 80th anniversary, Dan said: “It shows how strong the college is. Eighty years without faltering—it works, people love it. And I think it proves there’s another 80 years to come, at least.”
Winning the first Student Voice Edge Award was another highlight: “It was awesome. I remember getting the email and feeling this massive sense of accomplishment. The reception was amazing, and the food was spectacular—the cookery students did it, and it was so good.”
When asked to describe Gateshead College in three words, Dan chose: welcoming, diversity, and opportunities.
His advice for future students? “Gateshead College is a great place with great people. For new students, it’s so easy to make friends—so make sure you do. I’d regret it so much if I hadn’t spoken to people when I joined. I threw myself into it and came out with a network of amazing people.”
Looking ahead, Dan’s hopes for the college are simple but powerful: “I hope the college grows, expands, and keeps doing what it does—because what it does is amazing.”
