For Helen Richardson, Gateshead College isn’t just a workplace, it’s been a defining part of her life for over 36 years.
Helen’s story is a testament to the power of community, opportunity, and lifelong learning. Her journey began at just 16 years old, attending the college on day release. “It was so different from school,” she recalls. “The staff were incredibly supportive, and the whole environment felt welcoming.”
That first experience planted a seed that would grow into a lifelong career.
After a serious accident a few years later, Helen returned to the college for an evening course as part of her rehabilitation.
It was a turning point. “I enjoyed it so much and started helping the curriculum staff. They saw something in me and asked if I’d ever considered teaching.” With their encouragement, Helen completed her teaching qualifications and never looked back.
Her career has been anything but static. “It’s been fast-paced and fulfilling,” she says. After a decade in teaching, Helen felt ready for a new challenge and moved into management. From curriculum leader to overseeing the library and e-learning, she eventually became a senior manager. “I never imagined I’d get this far, but the support from everyone at the college made it possible.”
When asked what she loves most about Gateshead College, Helen doesn’t hesitate: “The people. Colleagues and students alike, everyone genuinely wants the best for each other. That spirit has never changed.”
Helen’s favourite memories are split between staff and students. “Seeing my team grow and succeed in their careers is incredibly rewarding. And watching students achieve things they never thought possible, that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”
Over the decades, Helen has witnessed huge changes. “When I started, we used typewriters and learned shorthand. Now, everything’s digital! Voice recordings can be transcribed by software. Technology has transformed how we work.”
One milestone stands out: the move from the Durham Road campus to Baltic Campus. “Durham Road felt like a second home. People were reluctant to leave, but we quickly realised it wasn’t the building that made the college, it was the people. That move really highlighted the strength of our community.”
As Gateshead College celebrates its 80th anniversary, Helen reflects on what it means to her. “It’s a huge milestone. To be part of an institution with such a rich history is an honour. It’s amazing to look back and know I’ve contributed to that journey.”
