Building Friendships and Futures at Gateshead College

Building Friendships and Futures at Gateshead College

October 22, 2025

As part of Gateshead College’s 80th anniversary, we’re celebrating the stories that define our community – stories of growth, friendship, and transformation. Ronnie, a former business studies student, shares how his time at Gateshead College helped shape his career and lifelong connections.

Ronnie studied BTEC Business Studies for two years and now works as a manager at Sainsbury’s. Reflecting on his time at college, he credits the people and the environment for making it special.

One of Ronnie’s favourite memories is one of his first at the college, the icebreakers on his first day. “As ironic as it sounds, those icebreakers helped us become friends. We’ve been close ever since.”

He also fondly remembers his teachers, especially Lynne Bell, whose classes were always full of laughter. But like many students, Ronnie faced the pressure of coursework deadlines and exams.

Yet he found support through one-to-one sessions, group coursework help and guidance from lecturers. “The college really supported us. They removed barriers to learning and helped us thrive.”

Ronnie also took part in work experience with Meldrum, arranged through his learning facilitator Joanne. That experience helped him realise which career path would be best for him.

“It gave me insight into what I did and didn’t want to do. That human interaction is what I needed. Through part-time jobs outside college, I found what I really wanted to do and stuck with it”

Ronnie encourages anyone considering Gateshead College to take the leap. “Just do it. The memories I made with staff and students were incredible. And if you’re struggling, reach out, the college offers support in every way.”

Though he left just a couple of years ago, Ronnie still feels connected to the college. “It’s a very people-oriented college. The staff and students always come first. It feels amazing to come back and still be remembered. The bonds you build here last a lifetime.”

As Gateshead College celebrates 80 years, Ronnie hopes it continues doing what it does best, supporting students and shaping futures. “Stick with what works. Keep helping people along their career paths. That’s how you build the next generation.”
