When Natalie Hudson started studying at Gateshead College in 2009, she wasn’t sure what to expect. “I wasn’t even certain I wanted to go to college,” she admits. “I heard an advert on Metro Radio about an open night, and that’s how it all started.”
Natalie began with an NVQ Level 4 in Business and Administration and an EAT Level 3. Her tutor saw potential and encouraged her to take the next step: a degree programme. “I started in 2010 and graduated in 2013. Doing the degree alongside my sister made it even more special.”
Her time at Gateshead College was packed with memorable experiences. “We organised a huge celebration at St James’ Park; selling tickets, arranging catering, it was stressful but so rewarding. We also had creativity and innovation days where we did everything from bear hunts to making prom dresses! But honestly, it was the people and the environment that made it amazing. You felt like you belonged.”
Natalie’s commitment speaks volumes: “I never missed a tutorial or a lesson. I’d start work early and finish early just to get to college. It’s a place that makes you want to show up and be better.”
After graduating, Natalie’s career took off. She moved to a global company in 2016, gained commercial experience, and by 2020 was appointed Director at Exploration and Testing Associates. “The degree gave me confidence to go for bigger roles. Balancing full-time work, being a single mum, and studying taught me time management and resilience. The support from Gateshead College was incredible.”
One person who made a lasting impact was Helen Richardson. “Helen believed in me from day one. She encouraged me to join the degree programme when I didn’t think I was clever enough or had the time. She coached me through my NVQ, taught me to think critically, and showed me I could do it. She was the loudest person at my graduation and even came to dinner with us afterwards. Twelve years later, she’s still my biggest champion, liking my posts on LinkedIn and cheering me on. That kind of support is priceless.”
Her advice for anyone considering Gateshead College? “Just go for it. Pop in, speak to someone, you won’t find a single face that isn’t willing to help.”
Natalie sums up the college in three words: creative, nurturing, dynamic. And her hopes for the future? “More of the same. They couldn’t have done more for me. If they keep that ethos, every student will leave feeling valued.”
