As Gateshead College celebrates its 80th anniversary, we’re shining a spotlight on some of the incredible students who bring our campus to life. Meet Savannah, one of our music students whose journey captures the spirit of what the college stands for.
Currently in her first year of our Level 3 Music and Performing Arts course, Savannah already feels right at home: “I chose Gateshead College because everyone was so friendly. The music facilities are amazing, and the vibe here is fantastic,” she says.
That welcoming atmosphere has given Savannah the confidence to showcase her incredible singing talents. From performing at Beamish Hall for the North East Chamber of Commerce dinner to lighting up the stage at The Glasshouse and entertaining shoppers at the Metrocentre, she’s making the most of every opportunity at the college.
“I even got a paid residency at Wyvestows in South Shields thanks to support from the college,” she says. “It was a competitive audition, but I wouldn’t have had the chance without their help.”
Savannah’s favourite memory? A flash mob performance at the Metrocentre.
“It was such a fun day. Definitely one of those ‘I’ll never forget moments’.”
But it’s not just about the performances it’s the people too.
“I’ve made friends for life here. I even come in on my days off because I enjoy it that much. It feels like a second home.”
The college’s support extends well beyond the classroom. Thanks to the team, Savannah is now set to perform at this year’s Mouth of the Tyne Festival, with more summer gigs on the horizon. She’s also preparing to release her debut single.
As Gateshead College marks eight decades of empowering young people, Savannah is proud to be part of its evolving legacy.
“It’s amazing to be even a small part of something that’s been changing lives for 80 years. You can tell it’s a college that truly cares.”
When asked to sum up the college in three words, she smiles.
“Friendly, welcoming, homely.”
And for anyone thinking about studying here?
“Just do it. You won’t regret it. The support, the opportunities, the people, it’s all at Gateshead College.”
Savannah’s story is one of many that show what’s possible when talent meets opportunity. As she prepares for her next chapter with a single release, festival stages, and more music ahead her message is clear:
“I hope the college keeps creating amazing memories for future students, just like it has for me.”
