Skills Bootcamps are training courses designed to help you to build sector specific skills and fast track to a guaranteed interview with a local employer at the end of the course.

Who are Skills Bootcamps in Rail, Engineering and Technical for?

Career-serious, promotion-seekers, first-job-seekers and new-job-seekers. You’ll have a decent level of skills in the industry because these Bootcamps are Intermediate and Advanced (Levels 3 to 5).

Am I Eligible?

This training is free to individuals and self-employed people who:

  • Are aged 19 or over
  • Live in the North East Combined Authority area (Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland or County Durham)
  • Have the right to work in the UK

Course length: 16 weeks

Times: Part time, 6 hours per week, 2 nights a week

Location: Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics

If you’re an experienced welder looking to take your career to the next level, this Skills Bootcamp is your opportunity to gain the advanced skills and certifications you need to excel in the industry.

Through a blend of theory and practical training, you’ll master complex techniques for welding pipes and other challenging structures.

We’ll help you get to grips with the latest equipment in our dedicated welding workshop.

This training is free to individuals and self-employed people who:

  • Hold a Level 2 qualification in welding or have 2 or more years of welding experience
  • Welding safety and precautions
  • Metal preparation and joint design
  • Welding techniques including MIG, TIG, Stick, and more
  • Advanced welding applications
  • Pipe welding and 6G coding
  • Inspection and quality control
  • Welding codes and standards
  • Welding metallurgy


Getting into Rail – PTS, OLEC and TIC 

10 day Network Rail Safety Critical Skills Bootcamp course including the following competencies: Personal Track Safety (PTS), Overhead Line Electrification Construction (OLEC1) and Track Induction Course (TIC). 

Network Rail Safety Critical – PTS, OLEC, TIC and CSCS 

12 day Network Rail safety critical course including the following competencies: Personal Track Safety (PTS), Overhead Line Electrification Construction (OLEC1) and Track Induction Course (TIC), Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS). 

Network Rail Safety Critical – PTS, OLEC1, OLEC2 and TIC 

15 day Network Rail safety critical course including the following competencies: Personal Track Safety (PTS), Overhead Line Electrification Construction (OLEC1) and Track Induction Course (TIC), Overhead Line Electrification Construction (OLEC 2).
