Skills Bootcamp in Green Skills

Skills Bootcamp in Green Skills is a set of training courses in the green construction industry designed to help individuals to build specific, job relevant skills and businesses to upskill their workforce.

The bootcamps will be delivered in partnership with AIS Survivex, Provincial Seals and Maersk Training, specialist training providers in the green sector.

Part of the Government's Lifetime Skills Guarantee, we have secured £1.2million of funding to deliver this specialist training portfolio.

How much does it cost?

The training is free to individuals or those self-employed as long as you meet the entry criteria which includes:

  • Over 19 as of the 31st August 2022
  • Live in Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland or County Durham
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK

For SME, the training cost is 90% funded, requiring a 10% contribution.

For PLCs the training cost is 70% funded, requiring a 30% contribution.

This course provides full certification.

Course content:

  • Choose from External Wall Insulation, Room in Roof Insulation or Internal Wall Insulation
  • One week theory and practical training
  • Up to three days site support provided (may be remote depending on location and availability)
  • NVQ Level 3 certification in chosen discipline
  • Product carding provided if you use SWIP RIRI/IWI or Provincial Seals Termo Bravo EWI system
  • Asbestos Awareness Certification
  • Working at Height Certification

This level 3 programme is ideal if you are new to the sector or if you are looking to progress from assistant level to a certified wind turbine technician. It's also suitable for those moving from nuclear, oil, gas or construction sectors. The course will lead you directly into employment carrying out installations, maintenance and servicing of offshore wind turbines and provides all the technical training and certificates demanded by employers for the offshore wind sector, 

With a high proportion of hands on, practical activities and face to face tuition, the course is delivered from the Renewable Energy Training Centre of Excellence in North Shields, the largest GWO approved training centre in the world.

The course is approved by ITC and is independently audited by Bureau Veritas and approved by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO).

  • GWO Advanced Rescue Training
  • GWO Enhanced First Aid
  • GWO Slinger Signaller.

This course is for those wanting to progress from a wind technician to a team leader. Crews on wind turbines usually operate in teams of 4 which means most companies will aim for 1 in 4 technicians to take a team leader role. This package of training, pulled together from employer engagement will allow someone to take on additional responsibilities and achieve a higher pay grade. 

Course Content:

  • Global Wind Organisation (GWO) refresher package for their current certification known as the GWO BST Refresher
  • IOSH Managing Safely certification
  • ECITB Leading a Team Safely
  • Two wind specific qualifications required as part of the job role matrix; GWO Advanced Rescue Training and GWO Enhanced First Aid.

Training will take place at the Renewable Energy Training Centre of Excellence and the Advanced Wind Training Centre in North Shields.

Designed in partnership with employers, this course will give you the skills needed to move into the wind sector or to progress within it. All course content is approved bye the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and the International Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA).

This course is designed to respond to a specific need by employers for skilled electricians in the wind turbine sector and is ideal for those already employed and looking to upskills, for example from a mechanical to an electrical technician. 

Course Content:

  • GWO Basic Safety Training Refresher
  • GWO Basic Technical Training course (which includes electrical, mechanical and hydraulic elements, focussed on the wind sector). 
  • Electrician specific training such as 18th Edition electrical, cable termination and a City & Guilds Level 3 in inspection and testing

3 Weeks Full Time

The bootcamp will be non-accredited and will include basic safety training, some basic technical training and optional modules including enhanced first aid, advanced rescue training and slinger signaler. The training will be assessed by professional trainers/assessors at Maersk Training facility.


Delivered by Provincial Seals in their training room in Team Valley the bootcamp takes learners through 2 formal qualifications which are required to operate as a retrofit assessor in the domestic energy sector: Domestic Energy Assessor L3 Cert, and Retrofit Assessor L3 (CPD). 

The bootcamp is delivered full time over 2 weeks.
