Skills Bootcamps in Green Power & Construction

Skills Bootcamps in Green Skills are a set of training courses in the green construction industry designed to help individuals build specific, job relevant skills, and businesses to upskill their workforce.

The bootcamps are delivered in partnership with specialist training providers in the green sector such as: 

  • AIS Survivex
  • Provincial Seals
  • Maersk Training
  • Training4Retrofit
  • Renewable Field Services.

Part of the Government's Lifetime Skills Guarantee, we have secured £1.2million of funding to deliver this specialist training portfolio.

How much does it cost?

These courses are fully funded for independent learners (those not taking the course through their employer). 

Employers using bootcamps to upskill their workforce will be required to pay a contribution (10% for SME and 30% for Large Employers).

Am I Eligible?

To be eligible you must:

  • Be over 19 as of the 31st August 2023.
  • Live in Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland or County Durham (or be prepared to relocate to NE for work).
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK.



This bootcamp is designed to align with equivalent courses offered by global manufacturers. 

The intention for the sector is to differentiate technicians from those that attend normal projects to the more advanced. 

This bootcamp uses the same facilities and equipment as the Blade Repair Technician but with a different mix of contents, based on employer engagement. 

Progressions from this bootcamp will ensure the NE becomes a hub of highly specialised and experienced blade repair technicians. 

Please note this Bootcamp is only for people referred by employers as suitable candidates.

Course Duration: 144 hours over 4 weeks

This bootcamp aims to train individuals as well as up skill personnel to ensure the NE remains a hub for blade repair expertise.

AIS Survivex has invested in facilities to significantly increase capacity to deliver this training for companies and individuals. 

This bootcamp utilises highly specialised materials and equipment as well using highly experienced and well-trained instructors from the sector. 

Designed in partnership with employers, this course will give you the skills needed to move into the wind sector or to progress within it. 

All course content is approved by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and the International Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA).

  • GWO Basic Safety Training
  • Blade Repair courses
  • Basic Technical Training
  • Rope Access training
  • GWO Control of Hazardous Energies (CoHE)

Course Duration: 204 Hours over 5 weeks

This course addresses a specific industry wide gap for skilled painters in the wind sector.

Course Content:

  • Job role specific training in the form of ICATS Train the Painter Gold
  • Global Wind Organisation (GWO) Basic Safety Training
  • International Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) Rope Access course
  • OPITO Blaster Sprayer Course

Course Duration: 176 hours over 4.5 weeks

This bootcamp is ideal if you are new to the sector or if you are looking to progress from assistant level to a certified wind turbine technician. It's also suitable for those moving from nuclear, oil, gas or construction sectors.

The course will lead you directly into employment carrying out installations, maintenance and servicing of offshore wind turbines and provides all the technical training and certificates demanded by employers for the offshore wind sector.

With a high proportion of hands on, practical activities and face to face tuition, the course is delivered from the Renewable Energy Training Centre of Excellence in North Shields, the largest GWO approved training centre in the world.

The course is independently audited by Bureau Veritas and approved by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO).

  • GWO Slinger Signaller.
  • GWO Control of Hazardous Energies

Course Duration: 164 hours over 4 weeks

This bootcamp is for those wanting to progress from a wind technician to a team leader. 

Crews on wind turbines usually operate in teams of 4 which means most companies will aim for 1 in 4 technicians to take a team leader role.

This package of training, pulled together from employer engagement, will allow you to take on additional responsibilities and achieve a higher pay grade.

Course Content:

  • Global Wind Organisation (GWO) refresher package for their current certification known as the GWO BST Refresher
  • IOSH Managing Safely certification
  • ECITB Leading a Team Safely and CCNSG Safety Passport
  • Four wind specific qualifications required as part of the job role matrix;
    • GWO Advanced Rescue Training
    • GWO Enhanced First Aid
    • GWO Control of Hazardous Energies (CoHE)
    • GWO Lift User

Course Duration: 152 hours over 4 weeks

This bootcamp is designed in collaboration with Building Heroes to retrain military service leavers, veterans and their families into an industry that is currently facing a labour shortage.

During this bootcamp you will undertake a mix of practical and theoretical learning and upon successful completion will have:

  • NOCN Street Works Operative Award L2
  • GQA L1 Award in Construction Health and Safety
  • Green CSCS card and White Street Works ID card.

You will have both classroom and real work experience sessions and will have pastoral/employability support throughout.

We have a purpose-built delivery site to reflect current industry standards and requirements.

Course Duration: 200 hours – 5 weeks full time

This bootcamp is designed in collaboration with Building Heroes to retrain military service leavers, veterans and their families into an industry that is currently facing a labour shortage. 

The course will include qualifications and training to equip you with skills and knowledge to be able to enter directly into employment and new careers in retrofit. 

Qualifications include:

  • L1 Award in Construction Health and Safety
  • Green CSCS card
  • L3 Domestic Energy Assessment
  • L3 Retrofit Assessor

You will have classroom and pastoral/employability support throughout. On completion of this course you will have a guaranteed interview. 

Course Duration: 200 hours – 5 weeks full time

This course aims to shape built environment education for the future and equip construction professionals and educators with the knowledge and skills to transform existing practices and deliver on the UK’s commitment to net-zero carbon emissions.

It will focus on sustainable, low carbon methods of building design/construction that help reduce the industry's carbon footprint.

Through applied, practical work, you'll explore the technical, social, and economic challenges that are needed to overcome in transitioning to zero carbon.

The course will provide you with the in-demand skills required by the construction industry to meet the global priorities of de-carbonisation and sustainable construction

Course Duration: 64 hours – 2 weeks full time

This bootcamp is fully accredited by the GWO (Global Wind Organisation) and is ideal for those with a technical background ready to retrain in a new area. It aims to provide the necessary knowledge and technical experience for delegates to jump straight from the extensive bootcamp into employment within the renewables sector.

  • GWO Fire Awareness
  • GWO Sea Survival
  • GWO Advanced Rescue Training
  • GWO Enhanced First Aid
  • GWO Basic Technical Training

The training will be assessed by professional trainers/assessors at Maersk Training facility.

Course Duration: 116.5 hours – 3 weeks full time

The bootcamp will consist of the following modules:

  • Introduction to Wind
  • GWO Basic Safety Training
  • GWO Blade Repair
  • Advanced blade protection and enhancement systems
  • GWO Advanced Rescue (Hub)
  • Inspection Methods Training
  • Mental Health First Aid for the Wind Industry
  • Wind Farm Familiarisation

This will be a blended-learning course with GLH carried out at our state-of-the-art specialist training facility by fully trained instructors and mentors from the industry.

Course Duration: 114 hours – 3 weeks full time

The Skills Bootcamp in Green Power & Construction is part of the Government's Skills For Life Guarantee, helping everyone gain skills for life. It is also part funded by the North of Tyne Authority and supported by the North East LEP.
