The Sport and Exercise Science sector has become more important as the link between physical activity and health is recognised. Jobs in the sector can be found in universities, in large sporting organisations, professional and amateur sports clubs, public and private enterprises, as well as in local authorities, schools and colleges. Related areas such as sports development, performance analysis and research also provide employment opportunities.
In addition to the sport and exercise science sector-specific content, you will develop the transferable skills that are highly regarded by higher education and employers. For example, the study of sport and exercise science particularly encourages the development of skills and behaviours such as teamwork, leadership, problem solving, creative thinking, research, performance analysis, resilience, evaluation and analysis.
The units you will study in the first year are:
- Applied sport exercise psychology
- Functional anatomy
- Physical activity for individual and group based exercise
- Applied research methods
- Coaching for performance and fitness
- Specialised fitness training
- Technology in sport
In the second year you will cover:
- Sport and exercise physiology
- Nutrition in sport and exercise
- Field and lab based fitness testing
- Biomechanics in sport and exercise science
- Sports massage
- Sports injury assessment
You will have the opportunity to join of one of our eight sport academies, where you will get:
- Up to 4.5 hours of professional training each week, access to competitions and specialist sport academy coaches
- Free access to physiotherapy assessments and treatment*
- The opportunity to compete in local, national and international competitions
- A personalised training and development programme
Our eight specialist academies are:

- Men's Football
- Men's Rugby
- Netball
- Women's Football
- Women's Rugby
They all offer outstanding, training, coaching and playing opportunities for everyone of all abilities.
You will primarily be assessed via written course work, presentations and some practical assessments such as fitness testing and sports massage.
There will also be two externally assessed exams in both years. In the first year there will be an exam for Functional Anatomy and Applied Sport Psychology and in the second year there will be exams in Physiology and Nutrition.
At the Academy for Sport, we have over 25 sport delivery staff including teachers, coaches and learning facilitators all ready to support your learning journey.
Each member of the team has their own specialist subjects that they will be teaching you, for example we have specialists in Anatomy, Massage, Coaching, Psychology, Biomechanics, Nutrition, Fitness Testing, Fitness Training and much more.
We have up to date industry experience to share with you and the energy and enthusiasm to help you to get where you need to be.
You will undertake a 30 hour work placement or work readiness activities as part of our employment edge promise.
You'll study at our Academy for Sport, where our facilities are among the best in the country and include:

This course will allow you to progress onto university after two years
with between 48 and 168 UCAS points depending on your grade. The
requirements of the qualification will mean that you develop the transferable
and higher-order skills that are highly regarded by higher education and
employers. For example, the study of sport and exercise science particularly
encourages the development of skills and behaviours such as teamwork,
leadership, problem solving, creative thinking, research, performance analysis,
resilience, evaluation, analysis and synthesising concepts. These skills are
developed through the variety of approaches to teaching and learning enabled by
the specification.
The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant sports and sports-related courses, for example in the last three years we have had students’ progress from us to gain places to further their studies in:

- Sport Coaching BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University Newcastle

Specialising in Sport Science and Plant Based Nutrition.
English Language GCSE at grade 5 plus four more GCSEs at grade 4 including maths and science.
This course is free to those aged under 19 years old.
Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free course fees and there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help cover the costs of coming to college, depending on your circumstances.

Reading Football Cub state they they believe that this qualification "would develop the required knowledge and specialist skills to enable students to progress through to the next stage of their development. We employ a range of staff to work in our first team, academy and community departments. Such roles include; Sports Scientists, Assistant Sports Scientist, Analyst, Physiotherapy and Performance Coach."
Sheffield Hallam University state that they "welcome the inclusion of external assessment (exams) in these qualifications. Also, the introduction of a larger mandatory core, comprising over half of each qualification, will provide students with a solid foundation. This means that all students will study a broad and common element of content, and therefore the wide range of options offered in the larger qualifications will be helpful in allowing students to explore areas in which they may wish to specialise at degree level."
