This course has been designed to provide an entry point for those wishing to start a career in the Building Services Engineering sector in electrotechnical technology or gain a Level 2 qualification in Electrical Installation.

You will need to have an interest in general Building Services Engineering procedures and processes, with a keen enthusiasm towards learning electrotechnical regulations, principles of electrical science and practical installation skills.

The qualification covers the key aspects of working within the Building Services industry to include a range of practical tasks and the underpinning knowledge for electrical installation work.

Units:

  • Health and safety in building services engineering
  • Principles of electrical science
  • Electrical installations technology
  • Installation of wiring systems and enclosures
  • Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering

The use of Information Technology will be promoted throughout the study programme along with the skills required for employability and personal development.

This qualification does not demonstrate competence to be a qualified electrician but will support your progression to further study.

Assessment

Your understanding and skills will be assessed by multiple-choice examinations, written and practical assignments at intervals throughout the course.

External assessed end exam

You will need to have a good understanding of basic Maths and English. A GCSE or equivalent in Science would be an advantage due to the electrical principles involved in this course.

You will be informally interviewed at main Enrolment to confirm the suitability of the course for their requirements and expectations.

You wil be required to wear suitable clothing for workshop activities and steel toe capped boots, and are also recommended to purchase IET wiring regs and on site guides to support your studies, along with stationary materials and scientific calculator.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free course fees and there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help cover the costs of coming to college, depending on your circumstances.

If you don’t qualify for funding help and have to pay for course, you could pay a 25% deposit and four consecutive monthly standing order payments for the balance. The course fee must be over £100 to qualify.

Or you can apply for an Adult Advanced Learner Loan, a low interest loan with no upfront fees that you pay back in installments once you’re earning. Those aged under 18 years old are not eligible to study this course as it is a part time programme.

You will need to provide essential stationery items such as pens, pencils, ruler, calculator, basic geometry set, A4 note pad and folder.

To meet the requirements for health & safety in our workshop, steel toe-capped boots will be a necessity. Tools and materials for practical tasks will be provided by Gateshead College.

Access to a PC and the internet would be an advantage however these resources are available in the Learning Resource Centre at the college.

On successful completion of this course, you can progress on to the following electrotechnical qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation [Buildings and Structures].
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment [Buildings, Structures and the Environment] work based apprenticeship programme.

A good level of maths and English are recommended for this program.

You will be taught be highly experienced members of our electrical team who have years of experience in both teaching and electrical installation.

All assessments are carried out in accordance with City & Guilds assessment strategy.
