Higher National Diploma (HND) Construction and the Built Environment

The Level 5 Higher National Diploma consists of the Level 4 Higher National Certificate (from a defined specialist pathway) plus an additional 120 credits at Level 5 delivered via one of six corresponding specialist pathways. On offer here is the management pathway.

The new HND Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications in Construction was developed in collaboration with a wide range of students, employers, higher education providers, colleges and subject experts to ensure that the new qualifications meet their needs and expectations.

There is now a greater emphasis on employer engagement and work readiness. The new BTEC Higher National qualifications in Construction was designed to reflect this increasing need for high quality professional and technical education pathways at Levels 4 and 5, thereby providing you with a clear line of sight to employment and to progression to a degree at Level 6.

Holders of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma will have developed a sound understanding of the principles in their ‘specialist pathway’ (management) of study and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. They will have learned to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. They will be able to perform effectively in their chosen field and will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making.

This course is designed to enable you to pursue a professional career in the construction industry, progress within your current employment or study for a BEng Degree in one of the many areas available; Architectural, Management or Surveying for example.

On successful completion of the Level 5 BTEC Higher National Diploma, you can develop their careers in the Construction sector through:

  • Entering employment
  • Continuing existing employment
  • Committing to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Progressing to university
  • Progressing to a higher apprenticeship scheme, in conjunction with progression to a university degree course

Mandatory units include:

  • UNIT 22: Group project
  • UNIT 23: Contracts and management
  • UNIT 24: Project management
  • UNIT 25: Management for complex buildings 

Three further optional units will be studied to complete the qualification and ensure a wide range of relevant technical knowledge is gained, leading to possible career progression or further academic study.
