This course has been designed to provide an entry point for those wishing to start a career in the Building Services Engineering sector in electrotechnical technology or gain a Level 2 qualification in Electrical Installation.
Learners will need to have an interest in general Building Services Engineering procedures and processes, with a keen enthusiasm towards learning electrotechnical regulations, principles of electrical science and practical installation skills.
The qualification covers the key aspects of working within the Building Services industry to include a range of practical tasks and the underpinning knowledge for electrical installation work.
- Health and safety in building services engineering
- Principles of electrical science
- Electrical installations technology
- Installation of wiring systems and enclosures
- Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
The use of Information Technology will be promoted throughout the study programme along with the skills required for employability and personal development.
This qualification does not demonstrate competence to be a qualified electrician but will support the learner’s progression to further study.
Your understanding and skills will be assessed by multiple-choice examinations, written and practical assignments at intervals throughout the course.
Learners will need to have a good understanding of basic Maths and English. A GCSE or equivalent in Science would be an advantage due to the electrical principles involved in this course.
All learners will be informally interviewed at main Enrolment to confirm the suitability of the course for their requirements and expectations.
Learners will be expected to provide essential stationery items such as pens, pencils, ruler, calculator, basic geometry set, A4 note pad and folder.
To meet the requirements for health & safety in our workshop, steel toe-capped boots will be a necessity. Tools and materials for practical tasks will be provided by Gateshead College.
Access to a PC and the internet would be an advantage however these resources are available in the Learning Resource Centre at the college.
On successful completion of this course, learners may wish to progress on to the following electrotechnical qualifications:
- Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation [Buildings and Structures].
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment [Buildings, Structures and the Environment] work based apprenticeship programme.
