This course is designed to develop learners’ skills and knowledge in light vehicle fitting within a professional workshop environment. Learners will study how to inspect, remove and replace key vehicle components such as tyres, wheels, brakes, exhausts and batteries, while working safely and using industry-standard tools and equipment. The course combines practical hands-on workshop activity with essential theory, helping learners understand vehicle systems, safe working practices and the expectations of the automotive industry, preparing them for progression into employment, apprenticeships or further automotive study.

You will study a mix of classroom-based theory and hands-on workshop activities.

The course develops technical knowledge, safe working practices, and employability skills needed in the motor industry, including teamwork and communication in a workshop setting.

Units typically include:

  • Health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • Tools, equipment and materials used in light vehicle maintenance
  • Wheels, tyres and braking system principles
  • Steering and suspension system principles
  • Exhaust system principles
  • Batteries, charging and starting system principles
  • Light vehicle routine maintenance activities

You’ll gain a strong understanding of how vehicle systems work and how to carry out routine fitting tasks safely and correctly, preparing you for entry-level employment or progression to further automotive qualifications.

Assessment

You are assessed through a combination of practical workshop tasks and online theory exams.

In the workshop, you’ll complete hands-on activities such as removing and refitting tyres, carrying out wheel alignment checks, inspecting braking systems, and following safe working practices.

Tutors observe you carrying out these tasks and record evidence of your skills and competence.

Alongside practical assessment, you’ll complete IMI online multiple-choice exams to test your understanding of vehicle systems, fitting principles, health and safety, and industry knowledge.

There are long written answer knowledge tests, and assessments are completed throughout the course as you progress through each unit.

Our teaching team are all industry experts with many years of experience working in the automotive sector.

As part of your course, you will be given the opportunity to take up a work placement with one of our employer partners to get a taste of the world of work and to further enhance your skills and knowledge.

Over 90% of our learners progress onto the next level or secure apprenticeships with local employers.

You’ll study in our state-of-the-art Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics on Team Valley in Gateshead.

This academy is fully equipped with dedicated vehicle maintenance workshops, body workshop and paint workshop.

You will be required to buy blue overalls and steel toe cap boots, these can be purchased at a discounted rate through the college.

During this course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience, this level 2 qualification is designed to prepare students for future employment in the automotive sector giving you the knowledge and skills to progress onto an apprenticeship with an employer or further develop these skills on another qualification.

You should have passed at least one GCSE and gained at least a 2 in maths & English or be working towards a Level 1 Functional Skills. Completion of an initial assessment will also be required.

If you are 19+ and don’t meet the requirements, you will be assessed on relevant experience and skills.

An interview with a member of the teaching team is required, you will also be asked to complete an initial assessment in maths and English, and various industry specific tests.

This will allow us to assess your suitability to the course advice and guidance will be available throughout the application process.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH A QUALIFICATION IN VEHICLE FITTING LEVEL 2?

  • Vehicle Technicians, Mechanics and Electricians

Knowledge

Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

Computers and Electronics: Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.

Education and Training: Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.

Customer and Personal Service: Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Physics: Knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understanding fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical, atomic and sub- atomic structures and processes.
