The IMI Entry 3 Introduction to Automotive Maintenance and Repair course provides learners with a basic introduction to the automotive industry. It is ideal for beginners with little or no prior experience. Learners will develop essential practical skills, gain an understanding of basic vehicle components, and learn safe working practices in a workshop environment. This qualification supports the development of employability skills such as teamwork, communication, time-keeping, and following instructions, and provides a strong foundation for progression into Level 1 automotive courses or apprenticeships.
You will also build your Maths and English skills and learn important workplace behaviours, including teamwork, communication and how to work professionally in a garage environment.
Working in our fantastic training workshops equipped with industry standard kit, you’ll enjoy lots of practical activities.
During the first six weeks, you’ll experience a range of different aspects of the automotive industry including mechanical, servicing, body repair and paint refinishing. You’ll then have the opportunity to choose a specialism to continue in. Modules will include:

Most assessments are done through hands-on tasks in the workshop, where tutors watch you carry out basic vehicle checks and maintenance safely.
There is also a short, simple online multiple-choice test to check understanding of basic topics such as safety, tools and vehicle parts.
You are supported throughout, and assessments are designed to build confidence rather than put you under pressure.
Your teachers are all industry experts with many years of experience working in the automotive sector.
As part of your course, you will be given the opportunity to take up a work placement with one of our employer partners to get a taste of the world of work and to further enhance your skills and knowledge.
Over 90% of our learners progress onto the next level or secure apprenticeships with local employers.
You’ll study in our state-of-the-art Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics on Team Valley in Gateshead. This academy is fully equipped with dedicated vehicle maintenance workshops, body workshop and paint workshop.
You will be required to buy blue overalls and steel toe cap boots, these can be purchased at a discounted rate through the college.

This course is free to those aged under 19 years old.
Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free course fees and there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help cover the costs of coming to college, depending on your circumstances.
