Build confidence, develop your creative and technical skills, and take your first step into the games industry.

This one year part-time course is designed for adult learners, whether you’re returning to study, changing careers or exploring an interest in games design and development.

Delivered two days per week, this flexible course introduces you to the core skills used in games creation. You’ll explore how games are designed and developed, create your own digital assets, and begin working with industry tools and concepts.

You’ll also learn about game mechanics, player experience, and how digital technologies are used within the games industry.

Alongside your technical learning, you’ll build confidence in communication, teamwork, and employability, including identifying opportunities and creating a strong CV.

This course provides a clear and supportive pathway into further study, including Level 3 games development or digital courses within the department, or into entry-level creative and digital roles.

The course is structured to support your development step by step, combining creative skills with practical digital knowledge.

You will focus on:

  • Developing professional behaviours, teamwork, and communication skills
  • Preparing for progression through CV writing and identifying opportunities
  • Understanding how the games industry works and the roles within it
  • Exploring the fundamentals of games design, including mechanics and player experience
  • Creating digital assets such as characters, environments, and basic graphics
  • Developing an introduction to game development tools and software
  • Understanding how digital technologies support games production
  • Learning how to stay safe online and work responsibly with digital tools
  • Exploring how games are marketed and promoted to different audiences
  • Developing ideas and concepts for your own game projects
  • Exploring ethical considerations, including representation and the use of AI in creative industries
  • Understanding sustainability and the impact of digital technologies

Learning is delivered through a combination of guided activities, practical tasks, and creative projects, helping you build confidence in applying your skills.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out through a combination of structured workbook activities and practical tasks.

This includes:

  • Completing guided workbook activities that demonstrate your understanding
  • Creating digital assets and responding to creative briefs
  • Applying your skills to practical, project-based scenarios
  • Short written responses and reflections
  • Ongoing tutor feedback to support your progress

Assessment is designed to support your development throughout the course, allowing you to build confidence and demonstrate your skills step by step.

Our teaching team are experienced digital and creative professionals who are passionate about supporting adult learners to succeed.

They bring a combination of industry knowledge and teaching expertise, ensuring that your learning reflects current practices within the games and digital sectors.

The team are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment, providing regular feedback and guidance to help you progress confidently through the course and into Level 3 study or employment.

Links with local businesses in the digital sector, meaning we can adapt to changes in the industry and access professionals for their experience and advice.

This might include work experience opportunities, guest speakers or visits to digital conferences.

The rooms are each fitted with around 20 PC’s and include a range of active network equipment, including patch panels, switches and routers in industry standard racks.

We are always looking to improve our hardware and software to keep rooms and equipment in line with industry standards.

There are no formal entry requirement but you will need to complete an initial assessment and an interview.
You will need to be eligible for the Adult Skills Fund. This can be discussed with the team.
Although there are no requirements for any formal maths and English qualifications we may require you to enrol on to a relevant maths or English course.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free course fees and there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help cover the costs of coming to college, depending on your circumstances.

If you don’t qualify for funding help and have to pay for course, you could pay a 25% deposit and four consecutive monthly standing order payments for the balance. The course fee must be over £100 to qualify.
