Students from Gateshead College have been gaining valuable work experience in the hospitality industry during a placement at a leading hotel chain.

The seven students have been spending time at the Holiday Inn, Washington to gain practical experience in the hotel’s restaurant and housekeeping department.

The students, all have learning difficulties and/or disabilities and study on the college’s Project Choice programme. The placement gives them the chance to learn new skills for independence and an insight into working in a hotel.

Under the supervision of the Holiday Inn staff, the students have been preparing the restaurant for service and working as part of the housekeeping team; ensuring the rooms are ready for the guests.

Catherine Pickard, Teacher at Gateshead College said: “Undertaking work experience is one of the most beneficial things that our Project Choice students do whilst at college and this latest placement has been fantastic for all the students who have been involved. It’s enabled them to develop their interpersonal skills and it’s been wonderful to see their self-confidence grow as a result the placement.

“The Holiday Inn staff have been brilliant mentors to the students and their support is really appreciated.”

Student Jack Murray, aged 20, said: “I’ve really enjoyed working in the hotel. It has been great to be part of the housekeeping team and I’ve really enjoyed tidying the rooms and making the beds. I think my teamwork and communication skills have improved thanks to the placement and I’d love to work in a hotel in the future.”
