Exciting new programme launched to inspire Gateshead’s next generation

Work Inspiration Gateshead, a new careers programme led by Gateshead Council and Gateshead College and delivered by key employers and partners, was launched today as part of National Careers Week.

The programme aims to help young people understand the wide range of opportunities and choices available to them in today’s economy and enable them to acquire the skills and qualifications they need to succeed in the workplaces of the future.

Speaking about the initiative, Cllr John Adams, Cabinet Member for the Economy said: “For too long the careers advice given to young people in this country has been pretty poor. If we want to create a stronger, fairer, Gateshead in which pupils from all backgrounds can realise their potential we need a thriving careers system that is accessible to everyone. To help achieve this, we’ve teamed up with Gateshead College and local businesses to do what we can to deliver the widest reach and contribute positively to social inclusion, diversity and equality through our Work Inspiration programme.”

Chris Toon, deputy principal at Gateshead College said: “Young people should be educated, informed and inspired by the wide range of career opportunities open to them and clear about the different paths into those careers.

"Through the Work Inspiration programme we can help them understand they have choices and encourage them to be confident about making the right decisions for their own future. This not only benefits them but also employers across the region who rely on having access to talented people with the right skills.”

The first Work Inspiration event, run in partnership with Kingsmeadow Community School, will involve their year 9 pupils. Students will visit PROTO at Baltic Quarter, Gateshead and hear from a range of innovative and inspiring companies who work there.

Graeme Dunlop, Head of Business Studies, ICT and Careers at Kingsmeadow School said: “At Kingsmeadow we are committed to inspiring our students, especially when exploring the opportunities available in the world of work. We are delighted to be working alongside Gateshead Council and PROTO to inspire our year 9 students and help to raise career aspirations for all."

Atomhawk, a digital art and design company who have created artwork for blockbuster films such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers, will present to the year 9s at the event.
