Our longest serving employee and soon-to-be retiree was honoured at this year’s Edge Awards.

David Jackson, our Head of Teaching and Learning, is celebrating his 40th year with us and will retire this summer.

David picked up a Staff Award after being nominated by a colleague for his work in not only supporting students to succeed, but also helping every member of the teaching team by bringing them together to share ideas and best practice. From this nomination, David was then put forward for, and won, the Colleague Award, which is decided by a staff vote.

David joined the college in September 1979 as a history teacher at the Durham Road campus. He completed many years’ service in this post before moving on to teach leisure and tourism. He was instrumental in the college establishing its own live travel agency to support student learning.

David became head of department for business, information and technology where he continued to use his dedication to outstanding teaching to lead and inspire his team. Four years later David moved into the role of curriculum operations manager for catering and uniformed services – where he was unwavering in his determination to give learners the skills and opportunities to start their career.

In 2016 David became head of teaching and learning and it is in this role that he has supported our entire teaching team. His focus remains on our learner experience and everything he does is for the benefit of our students.

Judith Doyle CBE, Principal and Chief Executive at the college, said: “It has been a real honour to work with David and these awards are a testament to how well respected and valued he is among the whole of our team here at Gateshead College.

“David has had such a positive impact on our teachers and our learners; he has helped so many people to achieve their potential.

“We wish him all the very best in his retirement.”

David added: “This is a fantastic way to celebrate my retirement year. I have lived and breathed teaching for most of my adult life and student learning is something I will remain passionate about as I hand over the reins.

“I have taught many wonderful young people and worked with an incredibly driven, talented and supportive team who motivate and inspire me every day. A huge thank you to everyone who voted for me; I appreciate it immensely.”
