Independent Governor – Board (HR, People and Organisational Development Experience)

Gateshead College is seeking to appoint an Independent Governor to join our Corporation Board.

This is an exciting time in the College’s journey. Having recently approved our new Strategic Plan, we are looking for passionate and committed individuals to join us as we shape the future of education, skills and opportunities across our region. Your expertise could help us turn our ambitions into reality and make a lasting difference to learners, employers and communities.

We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with expertise in HR, People and Organisational Development who can support the Board in overseeing workforce strategy, culture, organisational development and employee engagement.

No previous governor experience is required. We provide a comprehensive induction, training and ongoing support to help you succeed in the role.

About the Role

As an Independent Governor, you will play a crucial role in providing support, challenge and oversight to the senior leaders of the College. You will contribute to the strategic direction and governance of the College, ensuring that we continue to deliver high-quality education and support to our students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic oversight and guidance on matters relating to HR, People and Organisational Development.
  • Support the development and implementation of policies and initiatives that enhance the experience for all students and staff.
  • Work collaboratively with other governors and senior leaders to ensure effective governance and decision-making.
  • Attend and actively participate in Board meetings and relevant committee meetings.
  • Provide constructive challenge and independent judgement to support continuous improvement across the College.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in HR, People and/or Organisational Development.
  • Strong understanding of workforce, culture, talent, leadership or organisational change issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to think strategically and contribute to the College’s long-term vision.
  • A commitment to the values and mission of Gateshead College.
  • An interest in supporting education, skills and opportunities for local communities.

Time Commitment

  • 4 x Board Meetings per year
  • 2 x Board Strategy Days per year
  • 4 x Committee Meetings per year
  • Preparation time and occasional College events.
