Mellish Picked for the Three Lions

A former Gateshead College student has been picked to play in the England C Squad for a forthcoming game against Estonia.

Jon Mellish from South Shields previously studied a BTEC in Sport and Exercise Science and was part of the college’s Men’s Football Academy at the Academy for Sport. He now plays in defence for Gateshead FC.

The England C team is made up of players from the non-League and will take on Estonia at Leyton Orient’s Breyer Group Stadium on 10th October.

Men’s Football Academy Coach at Gateshead College, Gary Middleton said: “I’m thrilled to see that Jon has been selected to represent the Three Lions. Jon really deserves this opportunity as he has done a great job with Gateshead FC, having his contract extended after impressing in his first season for the club.

“Our Men’s Football Academy programme ensures students are prepared for a career in the industry and Jon is a fantastic example of what can be achieved if you are both committed and talented. The programme is taught by top-class coaches and enables students to work towards nationally recognised qualifications whilst developing their sporting talent.”
