Gateshead Football Club has opened its door to college students to give them an insight into the sports media industry.
Fifteen students from the Gateshead College’s digital journalism course were invited into the club and given the unique opportunity to attend a press conference with team manager, Steve Watson. The students were able to participate in the event, posing questions to Steve ahead of the club’s National League home game against Sutton United.
Steve Watson, Manager of Gateshead Football Club said: “It was a pleasure to have the students attend the press conference. They certainly made the most of this opportunity and had done their research, asking me some relevant and challenging questions. We’ve got a great relationship with the college and this is something I really value with a number of their former students having come through the ranks to play in our first team.”
Gateshead College and Gateshead Football Club has worked in partnership for several years and former students Elliot Forbes, Jon Mellish and Tom White who all previously studied at the college currently have full-time contracts at the club.
Curriculum Leader Len Leighton said: “Our students really enjoyed attending the press conference; it gave them a fantastic opportunity to put some of their classroom learning into practice within the fast paced environment of sports journalism.”
