Academy Coach Becomes England Boss

 

Women’s Football Academy Coach, Melanie Reay will take charge of the national team at a forthcoming tournament.

Mel, who has been coaching the stars of the future at Gateshead College’s Academy for Sport for the last 17 years, will be the team manager for England Women's U23 squad for the 2018 Nordic Tournament in Sarsborg. The Young Lionesses will take on host nation Norway

on Wednesday 29 August, followed by matches against the USA (Friday 31 August) and Sweden (Monday 3 September) in the round-robin competition.

Mel has previously been involved with the international team, when she worked alongside Phil Neville during his reign as The Lionesses manager. As well as coaching students at the college, Melanie also manages the Sunderland AFC Ladies team.

Mel said: “It’s an absolute privilege to have been asked to take charge of the young Lionesses and I’m looking forward to working with such a talented group of players. We are all really looking forward to heading out to Norway for what is always an exciting and competitive tournament. I’d like to thank Sunderland and Gateshead College for allowing me to take this opportunity.”
