Alex scoops place in BCS National Netball squad.

Our very own student Alex Rhodes from our Academy for Sport campus has worked her way to the very top and has been selected for the British College National Netball Squad. The British Colleges National Netball Squad is made up of players who have been selected from 3 stages of trials, a regional, north and final trial. These players represent the best FE Colleges Netball has to offer.

Alex will represent her Country and the College in a number of friendlies against Team Northumbria NSL, Scottish Universities and NPL teams such as Surrey Storm as well as playing 4 full internationals against Northern Ireland Senior and under 19’s National squads and Scotland Senior and under 19’s National squads.

Alex successfully made her way into the phase three Trials which took place on Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th December 2013 at Nottingham Trent University. From fifty players, only eighteen were selected with Alex being one of the talented few.

Alex has been playing Netball since the age of ten and playing in the National Performance League for the past three years. She decided to join Gateshead College in September 2013 after studying at Park View Community School.

Alex Rhodes says about the selection “Being selected for the BCS National Netball squad is an amazing opportunity and it’s great that I get to work with my college coach Julie Kimber also now as part of the BCS team.”

Julie Kimber, Head Coach of Gateshead College Netball Academy and also BCS Head Coach said “It’s a fantastic achievement for Alex to get into the squad. Over the past 5 months at Gateshead College she’s really progressed her skills to enable her place on the squad. We’re all very proud of her.”

The BCS National Netball Squad’s first training weekend took place just last weekend, Saturday 11th – Sunday 12th at Gateshead Stadium which is also home to the Gateshead College Netball Academy.

On top of all this the A team are 1st in the BCS North East league and have made history in all of their games played with the highest scores ever in BCS history. One score being 94-12. They’re also through to the semi-finals of the BCS Cup and will play this in a couple of weeks’ time.
