Gateshead College is working in partnership with the Jobcentre Plus (JCP), travel and leisure group TUI and hotel group Marriott to provide skill-specific training to help people secure new careers in the travel and hospitality sector.
TUI, the group behind well-known brands Thomson Holidays, First Choice and Laterooms.com is looking for a number of childcare reps to work abroad in summer 2014 while Marriott is seeking candidates who are interested in working in all areas of the hospitality sector.
A TUI childcare rep is responsible for hosting welcome and departure meetings, greeting arriving guests at the airport and hosting a range of daytime and evening sessions within the kids' clubs and ensuring a varied and entertaining environment.
Gateshead College is working with TUI to deliver a bespoke childcare and employability course. Designed to provide applicants with a clear understanding of what TUI is looking for in its new employees, it teaches basic employability skills such as interview techniques and presentation skills. Students are also equipped with other useful abilities including childcare and first-aid.
One student who successfully completed the course is Craig Sebert, 21, from Boldon. After securing work with TUI as a childcare rep Craig worked his first season in Menorca. He will spend this winter in the French Alps after securing a place within the Crystal brand of TUI. Craig will then go onto the Greek island of Zakynthos for the 2014 summer season.
He said: "I truly believe that I've found my calling in life. Working abroad is a completely different environment and so unlike ordinary childcare based work. It's a challenge but I love it and I've had the chance to work and develop my skills alongside some truly outstanding individuals.
"The course at Gateshead College really helped me with the basics and gave me the courage I needed to apply for a position that I have wanted for years."
A TUI open day is being held at Gateshead College on Thursday October 10 at 10:30am for people interested in working abroad as a childcare rep in summer 2014. Anyone over the age of 18 can go along to the event at Gateshead College's Baltic Campus to find out more and register their interest in the training course.
Marriott is looking for candidates who have a genuine interest in working in the hospitality industry and a willingness to undertake a range of duties in their preferred hospitality area.
The Marriott open events will be held on Monday October 15 at the Gosforth Marriott Hotel at 10:30am and 1pm. People applying will have opportunities within Marriott Hotels in Gateshead, Gosforth, Sunderland and Durham.
Applicants who are selected from each event will go on to complete specialised pre-employment training at Gateshead College before getting a guaranteed interview with TUI or Marriott.

Gateshead College asks jobseekers to bring a proof of benefit letter or a Jobcentre Plus referral letter with them to the awareness session.
