Six people aged between 19 and 24 are looking forward to a new challenge after gaining employment as children’s reps for TUI, the company behind well-known brands including Thomson Holidays and First Choice.
Gateshead College worked alongside Jobcentre Plus (JCP) and TUI in a bid to help the holiday specialists to recruit 30 children’s reps for its resorts across Europe.
The childcare and employability course, which is open to anyone over the age of 18, is designed to provide applicants with a clear understanding of what TUI is looking for in its new employees and teaches basic employability skills such as interview techniques and presentation skills. Students are also equipped with other useful abilities including childcare and first-aid.
Following completion of the training all candidates are guaranteed an interview with TUI.
Craig Sebert, 20, from Boldon, heard about the programme through a friend who studies at Gateshead College.
He successfully completed the intensive training course and was one of the six candidates to secure work with TUI.
Craig said: “I am absolutely thrilled about my new endeavour; it's a new chapter of my life and it will give me the chance to work alongside some amazing people.
“I have one week of training near London then two weeks in resort training. I would like to thank Gateshead College for this amazing opportunity and encourage anyone with the same aspirations to sign up to the course when it runs in the future.”
As a TUI childcare rep, Craig, and the other successful candidates, will be responsible for such tasks as hosting welcome meetings, picking-up guests from the airport, daytime and evening activities, child minding and looking after the youngsters checking-in to the kids’ clubs.

The recruitment drive for TUI is the latest in a number of initiatives run by Gateshead College in partnership with Jobcentre Plus to support unemployed people to secure employment. Through similar programmes the college has supported individuals to get back to work with Marriott Hotels, DHL Logistics and Nissan.
