Former Access to HE Student awarded at the House of Commons

The Keith Fletcher Memorial Access to HE Learner Prize was developed following the sad death of the former Director of OCN South West Region (OCNSWR), in November 2010. Keith’s family worked together to develop a learner prize for students in two categories, ‘Outstanding Academic Achievement’ and ‘Outstanding Commitment to Study’.

His passion for music led him to undertake the Access to HE Diploma in Community Music at Gateshead College and The Sage Gateshead. Paul Devlin, who nominated Peter, said, “Whilst all of the students that took part in the inaugural Community Music Higher Education Access Programme exceeded all expectations and showed a real flair for music, personal growth, initiative and quality, one student in particular, Peter, demonstrated a superb level of academic achievement.

His Final Major Project showed real skill and flair in its design and execution, and his work generally was characterised by a professionally high standard, which made him very suitable for further study.”

Peter displayed a clear, excellent understanding of music theory - including transposition – as well as effectively recognising musical styles and resources. Peter’s theory work was of a consistently high and accurate standard both in written and verbal presentations. He even gained a 100% score on his music theory test.

Peter then successfully secured a place on University of Sunderland’s BA (Hons) Community Music Course, provided by The Sage Gateshead.
