New multi-million pound investment boosts student facilities

Students at Gateshead College will now have more opportunities to stay active and shape up while completing their studies thanks to a multi-million pound investment in new recreational facilities.

The college has completed the first phase of a £7.5 million investment to boost the training facilities at its Team Valley campus. The project includes creating new recreational areas, larger multi-use classrooms and a support facility where students can access careers advice and other services.

The completion of 'The Hub', a new central recreational area, provides students at the Skills Academy for Construction and the nearby Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics with sports and social facilities.

The new facilities available for students to use in their free time include state of -the-art all-weather pitches, which can be used for a variety of sports including football, basketball and netball.

A new fully equipped gym, relaxation and informal study areas, a library, cafe and courtyard seating areas have also been added to ensure students keep in shape and enjoy their time at the college.

Judith Doyle, deputy principal at Gateshead College, said: "These brand new facilities are fantastic and further ensure that our students are able to enjoy some of the best resources in the UK - no matter which course or campus they choose to study at. We not only want to provide our students with state of the art facilities for learning, but also provide them with outstanding sport and leisure areas where they can relax, study and enjoy everything that college life has to offer."

Funded entirely by Gateshead College, 'The Hub' facility is part of a larger development by UK Land Estates, which, upon completion in June, will boost training space by 40 percent with new workshops, classrooms and IT centre and will enable the College to further develop its curriculum specifically renewable technologies.

The facility has been designed to be one of the most energy efficient and sustainable of its type in the region and will be built using green best practice and construction methods.

The College's Team Valley campus includes a Skills Academy for Construction which provides trade courses such as plumbing, gas, electrical installation, brickwork, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating and plastering with dedicated areas for each subject, and a Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics
