ECFA MEN

Grimsby 1 v 0 Gateshead

Gateshead started their season on the road to a very strong Grimsby side. It was a fairly even game with Scott Palmer having the best chance of the first half after heading over the bar from 6 yards.

Gateshead College's Martindale and Smurfwaite were outstanding and the side thought they'd broken the deadlock in the 75th minute when Dominic Harding shot home only for the referee to inexplicably disallow for offside.

With the game heading for 0-0 the referee then awarded the home side a very controversial penalty in the 87th minute which Grimbsy converted.

Paul Bryson Men's Head Coach said "We played well and the team certainly didn't deserve the decisions against them"

Gateshead girls lead ECFA to victory against Lincoln ladies

The England Colleges Football Associations women's squad had a tough second fixture of the season against Lincoln Ladies. Captained by Gateshead College's Sarah Wilson, of Jarrow, the squad put on a good performance and scored the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute through Steph Eadon of Gateshead College.

Melanie Reay, women's football coach at Gateshead College said: "The Gateshead girls did the College proud tonight and have gained some valuable experience."

Head coach Gill Coultard said "With so many changes from the last game with Nottingham Forest it was understandable it took the girls some time to settle down. They showed what they could do in the twenty minutes before half time and in spells in the second half. We are all excited about the forthcoming tour to Estonia and look forward to playing their Estonia National U19 team."

The girls will now move forward towards the tour in late May.

Minutes before half time Jess Clark finished off a Stokes left wing cross to give Gateshead a 3-0 lead at half time. In the second half Dearne Valley came out fighting and were reward with a goal through a set piece which bounced in the box and their forward to smash past Laws. English Schools Intercounties - Middlesbrough

Phil Hurst won the senior boys 3000m running the whole race alone in front.  His time of 8min 50sec is great but was not a qualifying time on this occasion despite the impressive win.  However Phil he has been selected to represent Durham schools in the 1500m at the English Schools Finals at Gateshead International Stadium on July 11th-12th.  We'll all be watching Phil's performance closely.

Gavin Howard had a real tough time qualifying in a recent pole vault compatition - imagine pole vault in the rain, not for the faint hearted!!  However, he did it in style with a personal best of 4.10m.  In favourable conditions Gavin is capable of vaults a lot higher, and we'll be working with him to bring get him to peak performance.
